San Francisco has always nurtured artists and innovators, harbored rebels, and celebrated life with music, alcohol and other inebriants. In the middle of the 20th century, historic forces and consciousness converged in San Francisco and set off a social revolution that changed the world. Its roots were in a longing for freedom and spiritual and human fulfillment, rather than merely material possessions.
Rebels first appeared in the sexually ambiguous bars and music clubs of 1940s North Beach. In the same district, the 1950s begat the Beat poets, painters, performers and jazz musicians propelled into ecstatic explorations entwined with drugs and sexuality. The Rock ’N Roll 1960s flowered with the LSD-fueled, free-love, Haight-Ashbury Hippies dancing to the psychedelic “San Francisco Sound.” On Broadway, in topless and bottomless clubs, public-sexuality was grinding to the same rebellious soundtrack. And in the 1970s, thousands of gay men found harbor in the Castro District, creating The Heartbeat of The Gay World, and dancing into the 1980s…to Sylvester and the Disco Beat.
